Description
Ontario’s Occupational Health & Safety Act requires all workplaces with 20 or more regularly employed workers to have a Joint Health & Safety Committee. Two of these committee members must be certified (one management representative and one worker representative). Certification requires completion of both Parts I (Basic) and Part II (WPS) Certification Training for Joint Health & Safety Committee members.

The purpose of JHSC Part Two Workplace Specific Certification is to supply participants the tools on how to recognize, assess, control and evaluate hazards at your workplace. This training focuses on hazards specific to the participant's workplace and documentation supporting attendance upon completion for due diligence purposes.

Participants will learn how to apply these concepts to a minimum of six (6) hazards relevant to their own workplaces. The learner will practice drafting action plans and recommendations for the employer through an activity.

The employer should conduct a workplace hazard assessment to select the most relevant Part Two training for members of the JHSC to become certified.

Employers should conduct this assessment in consultation with their JHSC.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
No, if you completed Part 1 and 2 and you have now changed employers, you will only have to retake Part 2 in order to be fully certified with your new employer.
Yes, if you completed Part 1 under the old standards, prior to march 1, 2016, you only have to complete Part 2 to be certified. You will however now be covered under the new standards which include a 1 day refresher training every 3 years.
