OSSA / Energy Safety Canada Fire Watch Training in Sydney, Nova Scotia

OSSA Fire Watch (Spark Watch) Training is required for workers intending to serve as a Fire Watch at any OSSA worksite.

OSSA Fire Watch is approximately eight hours in duration and includes an instructor-led presentation, review exercises, class discussion, written knowledge test and practical exam.

Learning Objectives of OSSA Fire Watch Training

Upon successful completion of the training program, you will be knowledgeable and/or demonstrate proficiency in:
  • Legislation & standards pertaining to fire hazards;
  • Fire Watch planning;
  • Types of Extinguishers, Agents, and Classification;
  • Types of Fires, Classifications, and Behaviours;
  • Operation of Fire Extinguishers; and
  • Fire Watch Duties and Responsibilities.

Fire watch professionals work in situations where welding, grinding, cutting or similar actions are performed, particularly in a location where more than a minor fire could break out. Fire watchers keep an eye out for smouldering fires.

The purpose of the OSSA Fire Watch course is to ensure that workers are trained in theory and in practical exercises to demonstrate a basic level of knowledge and proficiency while performing Fire Watch duties and in the use of extinguishing equipment.

A training program meeting this Standard would typically require 3 to 4 hours to complete depending on class size and number of Instructors.

It should be noted that the training required to meet this Standard focuses on the needs of the “end-user”. Additional training may be required for Supervisors and Engineers to reflect their responsibilities for this critical safety work.
